Wilderness area in covered, heated jet boats. This is also an
excellent opportunity to view and photograph wildlife such as
black and brown bears, moose, occasional deer, sea lions and lots
of eagles depending on the time of year. Seals are abundant on
the Stikine River delta. The Stikine River tour's include opportunity to view
icebergs and Shakes Glacier from a close but safe distance. The
tour's run from April 15 through October 15.
Your guide
will stop often for rest stops and to interpret local and gold
rush history as well as native cultural interpretation. Alaska
Waters takes a keen interest in the Alaska Native role throughout
the history of Alaska. Dick Stokes, Tlingit Elder, is our official
Native historian. He is Wilma Leslie's father. Wilma is Alaska
Water's Vice President and the wife of Jim Leslie, President.
Jim is grateful for the education he was able to acquire at the
hand of Elder Stokes. All of our guides are versed in native cultural
history as well as legends.
The tour crosses
the Stikine River Delta and your guide will work his way up the
river via back-sloughs and waterways. This is a spectacular mountainous
area with waterfalls and lush rainforest vegetation. You will
tour tributaries to the Stikine River where salmon will be gathered
in large Schools to spawn (July and August). You will see Eagle
nests and depending on time of year, large numbers of Bald Eagles.
The
Stikine River Tour departs at 8:30 AM and we get back to the dock
at 1:30 PM. This is an all day tour, and you will want to bring
a lunch. Sack lunches can easily be purchased from any restaurant
or deli in town. Alaska Water's provides complimentary sodas and
bottled water.
