Alaska's Inside Passage in the Tongass National Forest

LECONTE GLACIER & PETERSBURG, "ALASKA'S LITTLE NORWAY" DAY TOUR

May - August LeConte Glacier is North America's southern most, tide water glacier. The fjord is a haven for hundreds of Harbor Seals and their pups. The glacier calves frequently filling the bay with beautiful blue icebergs. Our jet boats are very maneuverable and can efficiently navigate around the ice floes that tend to block the bay.

LeConte's 10 mile fjord boasts a large population of Harbor Seals and their pups. The protected waters of the bay serve as a breeding, birthing and rearing site for Harbor Seals. June is the best month to see seal pups on the icebergs. The tour includes a visit to the fishing village of Petersburg, known as “Alaska’s Little Norway”. The community offers excellent shopping and delicious seafood.

Stikine River and LeConte Glacier is part of the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness area. See Stikine-LeConte Wilderness for more information (PDF).

LeConte Glacier Bay & Petersburg "Alaska's Little Norway" Tour Details

This is a great way to see another town along the Inside Passage! Enjoy a cruise through scenic Wrangell Narrows to visit the southernmost active, tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere. LeConte glacier calves quite frequently depositing giant icebergs in the deep water in the bay. The bay boasts a large population of Harbor Seals and their pups. 2000 years of glacial retreat created a 10 mile long fjord carving out protected area for Harbor Seals to rear their pups in relative safety. Granite cliffs with magnificent waterfalls line the fjord. Seals and their pups can often be seen basking on the icebergs floating in the bay. The protected waters of the bay also serve as a breeding and birthing site. Prime seal pup viewing is during the month of June. However, visiting Alaska's "other glacier bay" is spectacular anytime from May through September!

The tour includes a visit to the community of Petersburg. This quaint fishing village has a proud Norwegian heritage as evidenced by the beautiful rose mailing on most buildings downtown. Petersburg is located on Mitkof Island. Guests will be guided on a short walk from the dock to Main Street for an opportunity sightsee downtown and/or shop in local gift shops and galleries. Eagle Roost Park is just a short walk from downtown. Visit Sing Lee Alley and the Bojer Wikan Fishermans Memorial Park. The community offers great shopping and delicious seafood.

Lunch is on your own and your captain/guide will point out several eateries that serve fresh, local seafood. Guests are asked to rendezvous back at the jet boat 2 hours later for a leisurely cruise back to Wrangell.
